This is one time when the hoarders might have the right idea. Make sure you have the correct charging cable or adapter (for example, a Lightning-to-USB-C cable) to get a phone connected to the laptop.All this advice goes for your everyday laptop as well, which should be kept charged up as a precaution. And ff you’re planning on pulling a Marie Kondō and recycling old electronics, hold on to those outdated laptops until after the storm passes and you might make one part of living through a blackout a little easier.

Running Rise of the Tomb Raider on Very High 1080p settings yielded some interesting results. The Titan averaged 68 frames per second when it was plugged in, compared with about 40 fps when it was unplugged. We then ran separate tests for the Windows 10 Battery Saver and GeForce Battery Boost, and both averaged 19 fps. Meanwhile, the Dragon Center’s Eco Mode pulled a mere 15 fps.The Titan ripped apart the Hitman benchmark (Ultra, 1080p) while plugged in, at 120 fps, but severely downgraded to 38 fps when we unplugged it. Battery Saver didn’t affect the performance much from there, as the benchmark hit 37 fps. However, Eco Mode and Battery Boost were playing with fire, at 30 fps.On the Grand Theft Auto V benchmark (Very High, 1080p), the Titan nailed 85 fps while plugged in. What was interesting was that both the unplugged Best Performance settings and Battery Boost hit 16 fps. On top of that, Eco Mode actually did better by one measly frame, for 17 fps. However, the Battery Saver mode sunk hard to 7 fps.

A lot. And ultimately, the numbers we got when the machine was unplugged were unreliable as well. If you’re playing with a gaming laptop, there’s no guarantee it’ll meet 30 fps to be playable, whether you’re on the best performance settings or using a battery-saving app. Generally, laptops with powerful GPUs like the Titan are best used with a direct power source to be fully functional. Moral of the story: Leave that sucker plugged in at all times.You may remember almost exactly a year ago, when I reviewed the RIVER Mobile Power Station from EcoFlow. It’s small enough to fit in a small purse or even a pocket. Edges are rounded and everything is covered in a soft-touch, matte black material that resists fingerprints. Despite the diminutive size, it packs more technology and features than most mini battery packs.The Lithium-Ion Polymer battery has a 5000mAh capacity and keeps a charge for up to six months. That’s enough battery to fully charge an iPhone XS nearly twice. It offers two quick-charge ports, one USB-A and the other USB-C. You can even charge two devices simultaneously (although this steps down the charge rate to normal speed). There are LED charge indicator lights so you can confirm at a glance if the RIVER Rapid is getting low.

EcoFlow also says the RIVER Rapid is equipped with “the most advanced battery management software technology,” short circuit protection and over-discharge protection.What really sets this power bank apart is the 18W output of the USB-C port. That means it can be used to power many USB-C laptops, including an Apple MacBook. I didn’t have a MacBook on hand to test with. I did have an ASUS ZenBook S that uses USB-C for power, but that laptop has a power draw of 27W, so no dice... However EcoFlow says the RIVER Rapid has been tested with the MacBook, both 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros, and Huawei’s Matebook E, Matebook X and Matebook X Pro laptops.

The RIVER Rapid isn’t the answer to keeping your laptop running through multiple recharges or an extended power outage. You’ll need something much larger for that.However, it’s a great option for someone looking for a highly portable power bank that can fast-charge their mobile devices, while offering dual-charge capability, and both USB-A and USB-C ports. If you own a supported USB-C laptop, then RIVER Rapid has the added bonus of keeping it going almost an extra hour in an emergency. Not bad for $49.99 and just 3.6 ounces. The Yoga C630 WOS runs on the eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 mobile compute platform, and possible downsides are performance and compatibility when compared with typical Intel-based Windows 10 laptops.

Tests of earlier Qualcomm Snapdragon-based Windows 10 laptops found sluggish performance and that not all Windows apps would work. That said, these machines were based on an earlier Qualcomm chipset, so the Snapdragon 850 may resolve these performance issues.The most distinctive feature of the C930 is its dual-display, featuring an E Ink touchscreen that serves as the keyboard but which can also be used for notes, sketching, or as an e-reader.In a hands-on with the laptop, ZDNet’s sister site CNET found the virtual keyboard to be better than on the first-generation YogaBook but still lacking the responsiveness and feedback of a physical keyboard.CNET also highlights the device’s limitations as an e-reader due to the E Ink display currently only supporting PDFs and not the proprietary formats used by Amazon’s Kindle e-books. The nature of the E Ink display also prevents its being used as a second screen for the Windows desktop.
